Structural Erection: Intermediate deals with numerous diverse practical and visual skills with knowledge of specialized materials and techniques. The erection of structural steelwork consists of the assembly of steel components into a frame on site. The processes involve lifting and placing components into position, then connecting them together. Generally this is achieved through bolting but sometimes site welding is used. The assembled frame needs to be aligned before bolting up is completed, and the structure handed over to the principal contractor. This book will introduce the knowledge and skills for those studying and/or working in any construction industry.
About this Book
The information in this book consists of competencies that a person must achieve to enable them to position and fit up structural steel framework in any construction site. This book gives the details of the contents of the competency standards required for structural erection.
About the Structural Erection Industry
In principle, steel erection involves positioning, aligning and securing the components on prepared foundations to form a complete frame. The principal activities associated with fabrication of steelwork include cutting, forming holes, assembling and attaching components, cleaning and protecting. The steelwork is transferred to the finished stockyard to await bundling and wiring of loose components for loading on to vehicles together with site assembly bolts, ready for dispatch to site. In principle, steel erection involves positioning, aligning and securing the components on prepared foundations to form a complete frame. The design and erection should account for the various interfaces with the structure, and the associated tolerances. The final objective of the erection process is to handover the frame to following trades in an acceptable condition. Erection engineers are often invaluable individuals behind the scenes at major erection projects. An erection engineer oversees the major components of an erection, including budgetary concerns, time management, supply cycles, and safety regulations. Though erection engineers have specific duties, the job can encompass a wide variety of functions at an erection site. The erection engineer is responsible for providing a cost estimation of the total erection, from start to finish, to the contractor. Erection engineers must also determine the costs of all personnel involved in executing the erection. Erection engineers are accountable for creating an atmosphere of safety at the work site. Rules and regulations must be understood by all erection employees, and continually implemented during building.
