About the Press Machine Operation Industry

Press working may be defined as, a manufacturing process by which various components are made from sheet metal. This process is also termed as cold stamping. The machine used for press working is called a press. Metal forming machine operators tend machines that cut and form metal products. Some specialize in operating just one type of machine while others are trained to use multiple machines. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that a total of 939,700 Americans were employed as metal or plastic machine workers in 2010. With additional training on the job, operators become skilled enough to operate the more complex machines. Many metal forming machine operators are also trained to diagnose and repair minor problems with their machines. Operators work with a variety of different types of metal forming machines, such as rolling, drawing, forging, cutting, drilling, grinding, molding and casting machines. Operators may also inspect finished pieces to make sure they are free of defects. According to the BLS, metal and plastic machine workers earned a median wage of $15.34 per hour as of 2010. The lowest median wage, $13.54, was reported by operators of molding, coremaking, and casting machines. Cutting, punching, and press machine operators earned a median wage of $14.12, while grinding, lapping, polishing, and buffing machine operators earned a median wage of $14.74. Rolling machine operators reported the highest median wage, $17.63 per hour.
