Forging: Advanced comprehends various diverse practical and visual skills with knowledge of specialized materials and techniques. Forging is a manufacturing process involving the shaping of metal using localized compressive forces. The blows are delivered with a hammer or a die. Forging is often classified according to the temperature at which it is performed: cold forging, warm forging, or hot forging. This book will introduce the knowledge and skills for those studying and/or working in forging industry to interpret and convey information in response to workplace requirements.

About this Book

The information in this book consists of competencies that a person must achieve to be able to perform hand forging to complex shapes of different metals. It also covers hammer forging to complex shapes using power hammer which applies to open die forging of complex shapes such as forged bosses, heavy rings and bushes. Both competencies also cover specialized methods of holding, positioning and lifting complex forgings. Competency on performing drop and upset forging on a range of metals is also included.

About the Forging Industry

Forging is a manufacturing process involving the shaping of metal using localized compressive forces. Cold forging is done at room temperature or near room temperature. Hot forging is done at a high temperature, which makes metal easier to shape and less likely to fracture. Warm forging is done at intermediate temperature between room temperature and hot forging temperatures. Forged parts can range in weight from less than a kilogram to hundreds of metric tons. The forging industry has emerged as a major contributor to the manufacturing sector of the Economy. It is a key element in the growth of the automobile industry as well as other industries such as general engineering, construction equipment, oil, gas and power. The forging industry is well recognized globally for its technical capabilities. The small and very small units are mainly dependent on manual labor, however medium and large units are more mechanized. Quality standards in the industry have improved significantly and the sector is now well known globally for its high quality. Major international manufacturing facility is in immediate need of a Forging Technician/Operator. A strong mechanical aptitude, experience in the use of hand and power tools, good measuring skills and the ability to read a blueprint required.
