Diesel Power Plant Operation & Maintenance: Advanced combines many different practical and visual skills with knowledge of specialized materials and techniques. Diesel power plant’s is in the range of 2 to 50 MW capacity. They are used as central station for small or medium power supplies. They can be used as stand-by plants to hydro-electric power plants and steam power plants for emergency services. They can be used as peak load plants in combinations with thermal or hydro-plants. They are quite suitable for mobile power generation and are widely used in transportation systems such as automobiles, railways, air planes and ships. This book will introduce the knowledge and skills for those studying and/or working in diesel power plant industry.

About this Book

The information in this book covers basic to core competencies that a person must achieve to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitudes of a trainee/student in diagnosing, repairing and overhauling diesel engine as well as servicing alternator and diagnosing & repairing electrical system of a diesel power plant.

About the Diesel Power Plant Maintenance Industry

Most industries relying on electric power for their operation prefer to source their electrical supply from the local power utility grid. But those who require a reliable alternate source of power opt for an in-plant generating source to ensure an adequate backup to the grid supply. This has become an issue even in countries where reliable power has normally been taken for granted. As the complexity of power grids increases, instances of cascaded tripping and total system collapse seem to be happening more frequently than ever before. There are several options for establishing an in-plant power backup source. Generating sets with a diesel engine as the prime mover is one of the most preferred options in industries today, particularly in those industries where prolonged power outages may cause equipment damage, create unsafe conditions, require long process restarting time, and result in extensive disruption of production and consequently failed delivery schedules and loss of customer goodwill. Training and education for prospective power plant operators is usually offered in certificate or associate’s degree programs. These programs could help students qualify for entry-level positions that are not nuclear power-related, and they may prepare them to sit for various certification and licensing examinations. Power plant operators may monitor, repair and adjust the machines and systems that generate electrical power. Entry-level positions are available in power plant operations for certificate program graduates. Some examples are: Power plant maintenance worker; Diesel power plant operator; Power plant production worker and Electrical maintenance power plant operator.
