Animal species that are under human control are considered Domesticated. Reproduction is necessary for the survival of any species. The role of reproduction is to provide for the continued existence of a species; it is the process by which living organisms duplicate themselves. Animals compete with other individuals in the environment to maintain themselves for a period of time su cient to enable them to produce tissue nonessential to their own survival, but indispensable to the maintenance of the species. The additional tissue, reproductive tissue, usually becomes separated from the individual to form a new, independent organism. Through this improved understanding, the development of reproductive technologies like arti cial insemination, embryo transfer and sexing semen became possible. By studying developmental biology, a sub- eld of reproductive biology, we now better understand crucial developmental periods during gestation and can make appropriate adjustments in how we manage and feed animals.
